Self-leadership begins with self-discovery, also known as self-awareness. You cannot master what you don’t understand, and you can’t lead what you don’t know. To be able to lead our lives, we must have a complete understanding of ourselves. It was a quote I found in a book that said “know yourself” was the best and most profound advice ever given to humanity. If you don’t know yourself, you can overestimate or underestimate your capabilities. Self-discovery is the first step. It starts with self-discovery.

Many people live a life of “ordinary” lives and end up living mediocre lives. It is time to uncover your hidden talents, natural abilities, and natural gifts. Everybody can be somebody. Self-discovery starts with an honest self-evaluation and audit. It’s about getting “to know yourself”, understanding who you really are, your core beliefs, and what drives you. It’s not about pretending to be someone or what you believe you are, but being who you indeed are. It’s impossible to fool other people, but it is possible to fool yourself. It’s not about what others think or says about you. Many people are unhappy because they try to fit into a mold that is not right for them. It may take a lifetime to discover yourself, but it is well worth the effort. It is worth it to start sooner than later.

Instead of making their reality, some people accept the fact they have been given. Your parents, school teacher, and village can help you identify who you are. They can help you determine your capabilities and limitations if you provide them with an identity. They love you, and they do mean well. However, it is up to you to make your own self-discovery. If he had not given in to his brothers and father’s desires, the biblical King David would still have been a shepherd boy his whole life. But he was meant to become a king. You can’t be a king if others view you too highly.

If I had followed my parents’ dreams for me, I would have been an academic. While I could have been a successful academic, I had to discover many gifts and things. When I tried this exercise myself, I found that I had a strong desire to inspire others by writing, speaking, and singing. I discovered that despite my background in marketing and sales, I have a passion for helping others reach their potential. This article is an example of that desire.

Perhaps you’re limiting your self-identity to what you do. Your job, or what you do for a living, is not essential. You can do more. Perhaps you are one of those people who read a book and felt inspired to “go higher”. However, life’s challenges caused you to retrace your steps and slide backward. You might have lost your income, dropped out of school, lost motivation reduced the size of your dream, or given up on your goals. Don’t let setbacks and circumstances define you. You may have failed, but that doesn’t make you a failure.

Perhaps you had an intention to learn a skill or read good books. You don’t have to wait until it is too late. According to my, the average CEO consumes fifty books per year. That is nearly a book per week. If you want to gain an advantage in your business or career, this is also possible. Leaders are readers. After discovering the power of reading in 2003, I devoured twenty books and have been an avid reader ever since. It doesn’t matter how many books you read, just a few chapters each day. To get started, you don’t need to be a great writer. However, it is essential to start small. You can read fifty books in a year, beginning with the first page or chapter you choose to read. Don’t limit your reading to books. Audiobooks are also available, especially for those who are always on the move.

I hope that I was able to help you discover your true self in my own way. You are able to take control of your life and lead yourself. You have to take the initiative. It doesn’t really matter what age you are, which is a reminder to remember that there’s more to you. You will be grateful that you discovered it.

These are some questions that you can use for a self-audit. You are welcome to add your questions.

  1. What are the talents and gifts that I was given?
  2. If I had unlimited options, what would my ideal job be?
  3. What would you do if you didn’t have to earn right now?
  4. What are your values?
  5. What is it that I believe I was meant to do?
